Jeng Bihu

Jeng Bihu-Zeng Bihu

Jeng (Zeng) Bihu is an oldest form of Bihu Dance. Which was practiced during the Bihu season by the Assamese women in the early days (married/unmarried). This type of Bihu is mostly celebrated in the upper Assam areas mostly in Dhakuakhana.

The dance is practiced in a secret area, and men are not allowed to visit the place. The women covered the whole area with branches of bamboo and other tree known as Jeng. For this reason, the Bihu is called Jeng Bihu.

Nowadays it is less practiced, and a refined version of the Jeng Bihu dance is seen in the Phat Bihu of Dhakuakhana. Here everyone is allowed to see the dance.

The primary instrument used for this Bihu is Toka, and other women used instruments like xutuli and gogona.
